Regarding the thread about Confederate involvement in the plot to kidnap
Lincoln, it has more than once been mentioned on the GDG that, if you have
not read Edwin Fishel's "The Secret War for the Union: The Untold Story of
Military Intelligence in the Civil War," you cannot fully understand the
Battle of Gettysburg.
Along with that, I would venture to say that, if you have not read "Come
Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of
Lincoln," you cannot fully understand the events that led to the
assassination. There is a bonus as well, because this book lays the
foundation for understanding how the Confederate government and the Army of
Northern Virginia collected and processed information about the enemy. In
so doing, it provides the background necessary to better appreciate the
intelligence-related events that unfolded during the Gettysburg Campaign.
This sounds like a promotional pitch, but from my perspective it is
absolutely true.
