Hello,
He received a large number of threats to his life. In spite of that,
he did little to enhance security around him. His associate/body guard
Ward Lamon beefed up the almost non-existent security at the Executive
mansion and later threatened to quit after one episode where Lincoln went
to the theater accompanied only by two men that Lamon said could not lick a
strong woman in a fight.
A Copperhead newspaper called for his murder if reelected, and other
threats were not uncommon. In 1864 a group of assassins tried to kill him
as he rode to the Old Soldiers home, but found he was heavily
guarded. Probably in response to someone shooting his hat off on that
route previously.
The Booth attempt was not a part of the Confederate government, and I
would caution against putting too much stock into it. The plot was
supported by Southern sympathizers, but not an attempt by the CSA. As
Booth wandered South after the assassination he found it difficult to find
shelter as he was shunned by those Southerners - turned in by them.
Take Care
Dennis
