David,

Regarding Jennie¹s Dad, I don¹t think he was a pillar in the community. He
was born James Wade, Sr., in James City, Virginia. According to the Sept.
2, 1850 issue of the Adams Sentinel, he was arrested for taking $300 of
Samuel Durboraw¹s money which had ³dropped from his pocket whilst engaged in
some business...Suspicion was excited against James Wade (tailor)...who had
gone into Maryland and was making a Œflourish¹ there. He was followed by
Mr. Durboraw, and Constable Weaver, and arrested in Washington City, and
about $240, identified as a portion of the lost money, found in his
possession.² He was convicted of larceny and sentenced to two years of
solitary confinement at Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia. My goodness,
that¹s harsh treatment! James¹ wife in 1852 petitioned the Adams County
Court of Common Pleas to have her husband declared ³very insane² and he was
committed to the Adams County Alms House.

As for the McClellan connection you mentioned, I¹m thinking you might be
mistaking Jennie¹s sister¹s (Georgeana) husband, who was John McClellan.

³Jennie¹s² name was actually Mary Virginia. Her schoolmates often called
her ³Gin² or ³Ginnie.² It was newspaper accounts that inaccurately gave her
the title of ³Jennie.²

Thanks for all the info on the politics of the town at the time. Very
interesting. I really enjoy learning more about the civilians of Gettysburg
at that time. I¹ve been doing a lot of transcribing of newspaper accounts
and spend time when we¹re in Gettysburg at the Adams County Historical
Society doing research.

Ginny
