I've been doing a little research here too, all on the internet because most of my books and etc are at home, but it appears (according to "Wikipedia", don't know how reliable that is), that at Gettysburg Calef's battery was designated Battery A, 2nd US Artillery, one of five batteries under Captain John C Tidball, 2nd Brigade, Horse Artillery (Capt John M Robertson's 1st Brigade of 6 batteries completed the Horse Artillery component) .. the horse artillery and the 3 cavalry divisions were all under Pleasanton .. and as Rick says, according to the OR, Calef was attached to Buford on June 14 .. I am reading Pfanz's First Day book just now, and it happens I was reading about the early day activity of Calef just last night, and I wondered that very thing, since in the "order of battle" in the back of the book, Calef is not mentioned .. I also found an online bio of Calef which seems to state that he was with the 2nd US Artillery during most of his ACW service .. as Rick says,
maybe someone else can further clarify it ..

Hi,
According to the OB in the OR, Calef's Battery A, 1st U.S., was assigned
to the Second Brigade Horse Artillery, Commanded by CPT John Tidball.
According to Calef, "June 14.--Battery arrived at Warrenton Junction
with Second Brigade Horse Artillery, Captain Tidball, which relieved
First Brigead (sic), Captain Robertson. Same day joined the cavalry
command of General Buford." (OR 27, Pt I, pp1029).
The Cavalry Corps did not have a Reserve. They had two horse artillery
brigades with a total of 9 batteries assigned.
I'm sure that one of the cavalry experts can provide more details on the
horse artillery and the attachment of Calef's battery to Buford's
division.

Was Calef's battery in Buford's (First) Division on June 30?
Or was Calef's battery in an artillery reserve of Pleasanton's Cavalry
Corps?
