Here's what my boy Billy had to say of the
railroad cut and "capture the flag" that night:
Thanks being broken, friends met with
the cordiality that might be expected under the
circumstances, + we were entertained with many
stories of gallantry in the late
engagement. Heard that the color Sergeant of the
2d,, regt had, in a hand to hand engagement, had
his flag taken from him, while another member of
the same regt had, in a similar contest, carried
of[f] the colors of a Yankee regt.1 + learned
with gratification that the 55th,, N.C. regt
one of our brig. had deported itself in this its
first battle, in a very commendable manner.
And here are my notes on Billy's narrative:
(1) The color guard with Cpl. W. B.
Murphy [2nd MS Inf] had been killed within
minutes of the conflict in the railroad cut, and
Murphy had placed the flag within reach of Cpl.
Francis Wallar [6th WI Inf], a large man who made
a rush for the flag. Murphy struggled with
Wallar for several minutes before the flag was taken into Union possession.
(2) Sgt. Frank Price [42nd MS Inf]
attempted to wrest the Pennsylvania State flag
from Color Sgt. Henry Brehm [149th PA Inf]. A
brawl ensued, in which several Confederate
contenders for the flag were shot by the Union
color guards. Contrary to the tale Billy heard
at the campfire, the Pennsylvania flag remained in Union hands.
