I have to wonder whether there was a similar letter from Stuart in July 1863
when, once again, Robertson was on his way back to North Carolina. As I
recall, the way it was accomplished this time was that Lee reduced the size
of Robertson's command to something like 300 cavalry which encouraged
Robertson to, in effect, resign his position. Lee (and Stuart) then
accommodated him and sent him back to Richmond for reassignment. This
occurred soon after the ANV crossed the Potomac safely during the retreat
from Gettysburg.

One of my favorite Stuart letters was written to Flora on Sept. 12,
1862. "...Robertson has been relieved and sent to North Carolina. 'Joy's
mine.' "
