There was also a considerable influx of supporters of the failed German revolutions of 1848 who emigrated to the United States. As a group, they tended to politically liberal, pro-Union, educated, having military experience, and supporters of the Republican Party.  While they played probably their most critical role in the Civil War in their involvement in keeping Missouri in the Union, there is a Gettysburg connection with both Carl Schurz and Alexander Schimmelfenning coming to the United States after the 1848 German revolutions.
