It also led to the only (so far as I know) genuinely funny retorts made by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who, upon learning that his first cousin, George V of the UK, had adopted the surname Windsor for the British royal family after the onset of WW I, is said to have retorted to the effect that he was off to see a performance of the Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (the previous name of the British royal family actually was somewhat uncertain but definitely German. Prince Albert, the Prince Consort and husband of Queen Victoria, was born Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha)

Margaret
