GDG- Dogberry

[Harry Smeltzer]

It is from Shakespeare, "Much Ado about Nothing", I think.  The character
Dogberry was a bumbling lawman,, a magistrate or sheriff.

Greetings to all,
  In researching the 11th corps at GB I've learned that general Barlow was
referred to as 'Dogberry' an unusual nickname by his Pennsylvania Dutch
troops. Understanding that there was little love between them its most
probable that is was a disparaging term. Does anyone know the origin of this
nickname? Howard who was also disliked by these troops was commonly referred
to as 'Old Prayer Books" which is more understandable given his personal
disposition.
