Gang,
Just wanted to let everyone know (especially those of you who have been
"patiently" waiting for abou 4 months for the book to appear) that the new
book by Eric Wittenberg and myself, "Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb
Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg" will be shipping from the printer
by September 10.
After a delay while the history book clubs looked it over, and then the
printer not having the correct paper in stock (antique instead of regular
white) it's finally in production!
You can find information on the online seller sites, or our publisher at
http://www.savasbeatie.com/StuartRide.html. On that page, you can also
download the first few pages of chapter 4, which is a bit of the beginning
of the June 30 fight at Hanover Pa between Stuart and Judson Kilpatrick. In
there, you'll see a little surprise - the text of a dispatch from one of
Jeb's commanders, Fitz Lee, written on the morning of June 30 warning Stuart
of Kilpatrick's presence near Hanover. (Stuart and Lee were marching on
parallel roads for Hanover.) Unfortunately for Stuart, the courier bearing
the dispatch from Lee never made it to Jeb, and the rest is history - had
Stuart received the note, he likely would have taken an alternate route to
avoid a collision with Kilpatrick. I had discovered the dispatch in a July
1863 issue of a Baltimore newspaper, and it's never been made public before.
Certainly changes the interpretation of the Hanover fight.
Please note that the book is actually 460 pages, not the 380 or so that's
listed on the Amazon.com page.
