Hi,
The number on the marker in the National Cemetery refers to the number
of IL Gettysburg dead buried in the cemetery.
IL had only two cavalry and one infantry regiment present at Gettysburg.
Of those, the 82nd IL Infantry suffered 6 killed and 1 mortally wounded
(total cas.: 4K/18w/89mc).
The 12th IL Cavalry suffered 4 killed and 4 mortally wounded (total
cas.: 1k/5w/1mc).
The 8th IL Cavalry suffered no KIA/MW. (Busey, "These Honored Dead")
(total cas.: 4k/10w/6mc) (casualty figures from Busey/Martin "R S & L"
4th ed.).
The 8th IL did have on KIA, who was on detached duty as Gamble's
orderly, who Busey listed in his "Generals and Staff" section.
Did the marker you are referring to have an "8" or a "6"? According to
the sources I looked at, it should be a "6". There are 6 IL Gettysburg
dead buried there.

Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
I was watching a video I made of a trip a few years ago. I was in the
cemetary looking for Illinois markers. I found one that said 8 bodies.
Did that mean Illinois only lost 8 in the battle? Seems low to me.
Thanks
Mike
